Product Overview

Lonza's Human Renal Cells include cells isolated from various normal human kidney tissue specific to each cell type.  Human Renal Proximal Tubule Cells are isolated from the proximal tubule and are ideal for drug transporter studies.

Renal epithelial cells display a polarized morphology, which is essential for their function. They reabsorb nearly all of the glucose and amino acids in the glomerular filtrate, while allowing other substances of no nutritional value to be excreted in the urine. Physiological processes like osmoregulation and excretion can be studied with HRE in vitro.  Human renal epithelial cells are also capable of internalizing bacteria and are located near injury sites in a variety of congenital, metabolic and inflammatory diseases.

  • Diabetic Nephropathy is a chronic, progressive renal disease/diabetic kidney disease that develops in approximately one third of people with diabetes.  In a study, Lonza’s human proximal tubular epithelial cells were cultured in respective media (REGMTM). The group investigated the role of KLK1 (kallikrein) in tubular pro-inflammatory responses in cultured human RPTEC and examined the role of PAR-4 (Protease-Activated Receptor 4) activation in KLK1-mediated signaling in the development of DN. Yiu WH, Wong DW, Chan LY, Leung JC, Chan KW, Lan HY, Lai KN, Tang SC. • In another study, the role of micro RNA 1207-5P in the implication of Diabetic nephropathy was shown, where Lonza’s Mesangial cells and normal human renal proximal tubule epithelial cells were used.
