Generating humanized mice

There are different types of humanized mice, each with specific relevance to a research application. Two of the most common and well used humanized mice are CD34 humanized mice and PBMC humanized mice. These models are generated by injecting human immune cells into an immune compromised mouse in order to reconstitue a functional human immune system.

CD34+ humanized mice

  • Applicable for long term (up to 12 month) studies
  • Reconstitution in the mice takes ~12 weeks
  • Cord blood CD34+ cells preferred due to efficient engraftment
  • Robust T cell maturation and T cell dependent inflammatory responses
  • Example uses: Immuno-oncology, Infectious disease, Immunogenicity of biologics

PBMC humanized mice

  • Applicable for short term studies
  • Reconstitution in the mice takes a few days
  • Functional adult immune cells (low numbers of B cells)
  • Example uses: GvHD studies, immuno-oncology, HIV infection

Our advantage

With Lonza’s 30+ years of experience in primary cell isolation and tissue acquisition, our CD34 cells and PBMCs are ideal for use in generating humanized mice, and have been used by leading suppliers for years. Cryopreserved cells are immediately available in multiple sizes, and with a wide donor variety.
