Which agarose do I need?

Select agarose based on fragment size and application

Gels made of different agaroses vary in sieving properties, gel strength, and melting temperatures. Downstream applications may require Genetic Technology Grade agarose. Select your agarose by fragment size, application and quality

Select agarose based on technique

Agarose gel electrophoresis techniques such as DNA recovery from gels, in-gel reactions, Southern or Northern Blotting require specific agarose properties. Use this guide to find the agarose that matches your technique

Define agarose concentration by fragment size

The pore size of an agarose gel influences its separation capabilities. Smaller pores better separate smaller nucleic acid fragments. Increasing agarose concentrations result in smaller pores. Select optimal gel concentrations for your application.

Helpful information and
additional resources

For many years we have supplied the research community with high quality agarose gel electrophoresis products and enabled nucleic acid separation, detection, and recovery. Those years of experience led to the development of The Sourcebook – “everything you could possibly want to know about agarose gel electrophoresis.”

Section II of our SourceBook provides the following valuable information on how to prepare gels for agarose gel electrophoresis:

- Agarose and Compatible Techniques (page 76)

- Agarose Types (page 77)

- Agarose Analytical Specifications (page 79)

- Suggested Agarose Concentrations & Dye Migration Information (page 80)

- Buffers for Electrophoresis (page 81)

- Dissolving Agarose (page 83)

- Casting Agarose Gels (page 85)
